With 17 patrolled beaches, nine ocean rock pools, and a temperate climate that allows coastal enjoyment all year round, it’s no surprise that Wollongong has a great coastal vibe.
Ranked 3 points above the national well-being average of 76.5, residents in Wollongong have ranked their well-being as 79/100, which means they are more satisfied with their standard of living, what they’re achieving in life and the feeling of being a part of the Wollongong community.
This has been measured using The Personal Wellbeing Index by Deakin University, in partnership with Australian Unity, since 2000 and tracks how satisfied people are with their lives across the country.
According to Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM, this is a great tool since it gives a broader picture of Wollongong and provides insight into how the community views the city as a whole.
“The data collected through the survey can be used to guide our future planning including the upcoming review of the Community Strategic Plan and the goals within it. However, it’s also essential as the information guides Council on matters that are out of our day-to-day remit but where we can take on an advocacy role.’’ He said
The survey asked residents to what extent they agreed with a number of statements related to living in Wollongong. Through the survey, 9 out of 10 residents agreed;
- Wollongong is a good place to live
- Their neighbourhood is a good place to live
- They would help if a neighbour calls
- It’s a good thing for society to be made up of people from different cultures and communities.
- They feel safe at home by themselves during both day and night and walking alone in their local area during the day.
